I was wondering if there was a javescript out there that will close the Favorites/Search/Media in IE and/or the Menu Bar in NS when a page is loaded? Does anyone know of where I can find such a javascript? If not has anyone thought of writing one?

TIA. ;)

I don't believe that it can be done. If it can, it should not. If a user has that open, odds are real good that they know it is open and want it that way.

I am working on a site that has fixed width tables (has to have them), but when the site is viewed and the favorites or menu bar is open the layout does not display properly.

Should I use a pop-up window with the dimensions I need to load the site from the splash page instead of just using the target="_parent" or target="_blank"? Which opens a page with the favorites/menu open if it already is open on the splash page.

You'll have to forgive me if this seems like a silly question. :O My brain is beyond overloaded right now. Normally I just figure these things out for myself. :P

Thanks for your input guys.

Hi Elaine...

2 things:

1) yes... open a new window (and control what you want)

2) tables for layout? (tsk-tsk)

Is there a place where tables vs. divs was discussed? I figured that must have come up sometime so I probably don't have to bring it up again, but I would like to hear what is wrong with using tables(beside the fact that the W3C said so). Thanks! ;)

so Adam... you encourage tables for layout?
so tell me... how many lines of table tags do you think are appropriate before it becomes more than necessary for the task at-hand?

and what about nested tables? the more the merrier?

bust chops if you want... i was only giving food for thought.
(i became a happy convert via the same type of persuassion. are you gonna tell me that i'm wrong to not use tables for layout?).

to each her/his own, i guess.
sorry i even mentioned it

 k

I have despised tables since the night they made me cry when I was trying to get up my first page. Seriously tho, that is an interesting topic i think...

I dont think he meant ill will by his statement myself but I am curious to hear more from others why tables Bad , Div good.

Keep talkin' :D

Umm... Khaki, I wasn't encouraging tables. All I said is that I wanted to know WHY people don't like them.

The reason I'm wondering is because all I have ever heard for reasons not to use tables is "the W3C said not to use them." That would be fine except that tables are better than divs in some ways, mainly that they work in NS4. I realize that tables don't work for screen readers, but I think that there will be far more people coming to my site using NS4 than screen readers... ;)

Cheers!
