I have read a lot about Oracle and being a certified DBA or something. I don't really understand what it is though. Could someone explain to me what it is, the benefits, and so on?

NogDog 10-24-2005, 12:32 AM Oracle is a commercially available relational database management system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RDBMS) (RDBMS). A DBA is a DataBase Administrator. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Database_administrator) Waylander 10-24-2005, 01:35 AM Im sitting next to an Oracle DBA at the moment, im an Analyst Programmer and most of the time im doing application development with PL\SQL and Oracle Software. You dont have a location so some of this might not help you, and im not a DBA but i know a bit about it, what I can give you are some general outlines about this section of the IT industry. Basically an Oracle database is too complex to be configured and left alone, like something like MySql can be, its a full time job to manage and configure an Oracle system, which is what a Database Administrator does. They control user accounts schemas and environments, they also track the databases to keep them efficient and to watch for abuse. They are also in control of software updates and installations. Posatives: Oracle is at the top end of the software food chain, its large complex software that costs a fair amount for its features, it offers what would be considered considerably fortuous employment oppurtunities. High levels of in built security for the systems that are developed and configured within Oracle technologies. Certainly what I would consider a challenging career path, which I include as a posative, others might not. Negatives: The skills needed to work in the industry are harder to gain and are difficult to undertake, and mostly being somewhat expensive, I am glad i made it through my training because a fair few didnt.... Hard work day to day, there arent alot of single freelance oracle developers operating from an ABN, like alot of people do for web development, your probably going to be looking for a full time position which will be harder to find. In my opinion the posatives far outway the gains, I can definately handle the hard and somewhat more costly training because I see it as an investment, and I definately value the challenging career path. Good Luck :) Waylander. webdeveloper.com
