Advise on using Freelancers (in india)?

Hi I wonder if anyone could give me some advise based on their experiences.

I am in the process of choosing a freelancer to build a complex php based commerce website at the moment. I have narrowed a list of about 30 down to three based on price, quality of portfolio and their communications with me, and have just updated them with a more detailed design brief.

The ballpark figure I am looking at is around $3,000. 2 out of three and my favourites I think are based in India (I am in the UK). I plan to pay them though the escrow system on guru.com for security.

Can anyone advise me apart form the specification of the site, anything else I should ask for, I.e. references, after sales service, or actual code version of the site.

I am not a web professional so am not to up on this side so any general feedback would be appreciated as well as any experiences about using companies from abroad.

Myself I would have a hard time using an out of country contractor.

I would look at what are your rights after your project is complete. Do you own the code and this is only one question after the other 3 you mentioned.

Personally it's a no brainer to ask for what you suggested. I would talk to and verify past clients and that they are who they say they are.

Not being a Web Professional - This is no excuse for not treating them as you would any employee or contractor you would hire.

I have use a few indian firms before and for the price which we can not discuss, I have never had any problems with using them.

You can say I spent X on a project for with them... We discuss if it's a fair price to pay if your the buyer. But we cannot discuss what to charge for that project.

I'll get clairifcation on this.

c u must contact some company from india but not a single person else u cud end up getting ur site being messed up.

thats the problem with a lot of people today. all thay think about is saving a few pennies by getting foreign companies/people to do a job that people here in UK can do for you. why contract out of the country?

Get someone form the UK to do it for you.
