I'm not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for, but I use this program to look at all the fonts on my comp. You can type in some text and see how it will look with all of your fonts.

Yes - that's a big help.

I have close to 1300 fonts on my computer. It's a pain to have to search for the "perfect" one. I can never remember the names.
