Hi there,

I'm going to be looking for a good graphic web designer who doesn't have to know coding (I already have a website coder), but needs to know site navigation, layout, colour psychology, colour schemes etc.

What questions should I ask them in order to figure out if they know what they are doing?

Thanks

The best way is to have them show you work that they have already done.

Yes, I knew that part already. I just wanted specific skill testing questions.

Thanks :)

Ask them about their skills in php and css. Are they up to date with the w3.org standards? Ask if they could build a forum from scratch or how well their php/sql integration skills are. If they hesitate, don't take it as ignorance unless they give a very vague and general reply (infact, be wary if they're fast talkers). If they can give pretty specific, detailed answers and give examples of what they did or worked on, then they're probably pretty good. Remember, it's the nature of coders to not be huge on their intrapersonal skills. Most of the brilliant ones aren't going to win any congeneality contests.

You mentioned that you already have a coder, but I would want a graphic designer that is knowledgeable about the differences between designing for print and designing for the web. There are quite a lot of differences, and the graphic designer should be able to work well with the coder (and vice versa).

Well I don't want a grapich designer who's only done print & knows nothing of sites. I mean really LOL, we are on the net dealing with web sites.

It's amazing how many people STILL sell themselves as experienced when they still know nothing about sites, how they work, how they should be laid out, colour psychology, where navs should be placed & so on & so on.

And yes, I feel a designer should be able to work w/ a coder.

Thanks :)
