i think this is a really nice design. i like the colors and the font in the header. but if this is a professional site, if you are trying to sell a service with this site (web design that is) then i'd most definetly remove your flash practice files. theyre great for you personally but why on earth would you want to show potential clients that your still practicing? it makes me think of a school project site or something. other than that, looks nice.

I agree about the flash part. Also, why do you have a top link at the bottom, when your site has a fixed height. Apart from that its pritty good.

Site looks fine. You might want to stick some validation on your contact form, though.

Hi -
Thanks all.
Yeah, link to top was if anyone was using a dinky screen size;
so sort of useless, probably. The Flash was to demo.
a few of the possibilities available for any non-flash peeps.
Should I just try and generate commonly used stuff like ads,
headers, nav to use, instead? [Boring, but want some ex's.]

If I knew more about perl, I'd dip into the contact form script
for character / error checking stuff - but it works so well I hate to meddle!
[Have killed many a script in the past...] Will hunt for an alternate, tho.

**edit** Oh, THAT kind of validation...fin!

Much appreciated,
El

also your graphics are kinda blurry and/or pixelated
e.g.: top part of http://elsite.net/design/images/leftbar.png and the big tomato too

If you're playing around with it, maybe try to put the menu at the left edge. It might not look better, per se. It's just something to try. Otherwise it's quite good and simple. I like the small, modest design, especially when you keep the size and have a scrollbar in the web-tutorial section. It's just too bad that you can't color scrollbars in with browsers like firefox (or can you?).

Also, I think that if anyone is using anything under 1024X768, they need an upgrade and shouldn't be catered to. There's no need for a "top" link, but the site is so simple, it doesn't matter.

Hi -
Tried that 'cause I'm tired of the nav at left...
or below header, etc. Just playing.

LCF - the tomato img was altered - blurred, shadows, etc.
Ditto with the graphic above links. Supposed to be truly fuzzy ;-)

Thanks again,
El

Interesting design. I guess you're "in" to tomatoes. (Ever thought of changing the vegetable according to the growing season? ;))

There's a little graphic sort of like an arrow on the left side of the tomato -- what is it? I thought, since it did look like an arrow, it was some sort of navigational component. Is this little thing necessary?

Nice work - AS ALWAYS!

Hi -
Thanks, KDLA.
The idea was to mimic an old-time produce label.

[Now that you mention it, since aphids prevented my tomato
plants from making much this past summer, perhaps there's a
bitterness, there.... ;-) ]

That decorative thingy above the nav was to bring a bit
of 'prettiness' and more red to that area...not good?
Will mess around a bit to see if I can come up w/ something better,

Yeah - I got the product label allusion. I was just being stupid.

We (the upper South) had a drought this past summer. If that was my webpage, the tomatoes would be about 12% of that size! :)

The "arrow" graphic I'm referring to isn't red -- it's whitish-gray, about 20 px high, on the left corner of the tomato graphic. I liked the red swirly one. :)

I like the design a lot. However, there are two minor things that bug me:

1. Blue text with blue background (in the header) is hard to read. I am not sure how to fix this, because with blue, pretty much only white and yellow look 'great' on blue bg. However, you may be going for subtlety, in which case, it looks good.

2. The flash stuff does look a little 'hobbiest' vs. 'developer'. I have similar things in my site, but for these, I still want to show them off, so I will build a 'lab' site and put them in there. Google and Amazon even have labs, so this is ok in my book.

Hi -
Ubik: yup, header text for subtlety.
Like the flashlab idea & will do next time - thanks!

KDLA: oh, it was a straight can of whole, peeled, tomatoes used -
when I altered the img, part of the label came out rather arrow-like.
[Hope that since it's blurred not many will think it's relevant!]

Appreciate it,
El

Hi, LJK !!!
I like your site, it's really original !!! The tomato is great !!! :)
So, what can I say that hasn't been said already...
mmm.. maybe the green background in the services topic. It upsets me. I would like it a bit paler, softer, I don't know...
But it's just details. Your site looks great, and from what I've seen, so do your previous layouts.
Great work !!!
(I'm please to see that sometimes, people really do original things...)

Hi -
N.d.F. - Now that you've mentioned it, think I should play around w/ alternatives to the green; a bit 'oogey'. [edit: done!]

Yeah, originality's about the only thing going for me...
;-)

Thanks,
El

hehe, much better, now...
OR, or, you could try ( but that's just a try, hmm, I don't know how it could turn out) a very dark shade of red.
Could be interesting to see how it comes out.

Really like it very original!

Only comment I would make tho is maybe to align the text boxes on the Contact us page IMO they are a little all over the place.
Very good job tho! ;)

Hi -
Thanks for the time...
yeah Mike I pm'd you about those pesky critters!

Textboxes are aligned left but maybe the spacing I added looks funky?
