JS in .pdf form

Need help with what I believe should be a simple action. That is until I have spent a heap of time on the web and still can't get started.

I need to use javascript to achieve one action in each of a series of 1 character text fields only I don't know anything really about Java.
The form fields are in Acrobat (.pdf) and require the instruction "when key is struck insert required character and tab to next text field.

I know, get some books and learn the language but I don't have that kind of time on my hands. These fields are in a document form I have which I would like to modify.
Can some one please point me in the direction with some code or sources so I have some idea please ?

Ok, looks like as a newbie to JS i was fooled by the "JavaScript editor" used to insert instructions in the form fields in Acrobat.
Back to the manual!
