Being a typical bloke, I haven't a clue...

Not much of a scheme. Consult a color schemer to give you some ideas. Here are a few:

How about now? I have added some orange, which I want to be the main color, but still I think it needs more so that it looks like its meant to be there...

Not sure where you added orange because I don't see it offhand. I would make the blue a darker shade. Beyond that, just use the color more than thin lines would really help the design out. Right now there is a ton of white going on.

There was orange but it was very pale as I'm not a great fan of strong colors. I have made them darker - what do you think? (http://www.articlewow.com)

make them darker, not that the links pale, but they're too bright
I don't like your "logo" or banner too much

And, you could change the Google Adsense color scheme as well (for it to fit better with your site)

I was a bit confused by what you meant. Make the links darker?
