I know this is really advanced for some people including me but i know this site is full of people that are very advanced coders (for lack of a different term) and it is possible some people have the ability to make one but i think it would be really cool if a group of people started something like that to compeate with the likes of google and yahoo :D

Is it really possible though because google has a spider that goes through something like a billion pages a month. Wouldn't it be hard to compete with that?

Having the best search engine isnt allways the most important. Like on yahoo it doesnt have to be the main attraction but yes i think its possible to compeat with them.

You do realise that your letting yourself and others in for a heap of work.

We presently run our own search engine (and pretty darn nice little one at that) but theres no way we would want to compete for Googles position.

at the moment we have to put in 16 hour days just to keep the thing online we tried using normal hosting and after shutting several variations of server down due to excessive loads placed on them we went full dedicated and even that has some heart problems when we get busy (over 1,000,000 hits a week)

Running a search engine may sound like a lot of fun but it really hard work and theres heaps that can go wrong at any given moment.

You also have to consider what safeguards you employ against spam etc and while you may be able to pick up some ones discarded script cheap or for free you have to wonder why they threw the thing away in the first place.

Take it from me chaps think hard and fast before you commit yourselves to a project like this
