I am attempting to create a image in Photoshop; a tutorial in fact that is depicting how to create one of those "wax seal" things with a logo in it...One of the problems is that it keeps mentioning channels and I am curious if there is a difference between working in a channel or just the layer....

The next problem I encounter is loading a selection so it can be used as a texture channel when I utilize the Lighting filter in Photoshop...it really doesn't seem to work so anyone have an idea of what I am doing wrong?

To load a selection, hold down on the ctrl (control) key and click on the layer (in the layers palette) you want to load.
