Having users safely upload cropped images to my own website

I don't entirely know where to place this, but it's kinda graphics related, so figured this might be a good place to start:

I'm just about to set up a new website idea, with the option for anyone to upload photos to a particular website (kind of similar to http://www.infinitecat.com/index.html, but also not similar at the same time).

I'll be wanting to check any images before they're published onto the web (ie to ensure they're suitable, etc..), but also don't really want one of my POP3 accounts to be bombarded with big bunches of 2mb email attachments each day.

So does anyone know of a way to have images uploaded to a server, using something from the following:
Operating system
RedHat linux 7.3
Web server
Apache 1.3.27
Scripting language
PHP 4.3.10
Scripting language
SunONE ASP 3.6.2
CGI Scripting language
Perl 5.6.1
Database server
MySQL 3.23.56
Mail server
Exim 3.36

ie. something which only accepts file uploads of jpegs, gifs, or pngs file formats, and automatically crops, resizes, or rejects image files over a certain image size? (that's also hopefully likely to be virus safer too)

I don't want to be hosting this on something like yahoo groups or the like, because I want to be adding my own advertising, rather than forced banner ads, etc..

check with your hosting provider... as they might have an easy to install gallery app to run like coppermine.

Also you didn't list your site however if your running a CMS bases site there may be a mod that will allow for a moderated photo gallery as well.

your just looking for something you can moderate, if your lookign for a better word.

I'm currently hosted with Pipex, www.hosting-support.pipex.net, but I can't seem to find any sort of photo upload option.

I'll try and give the files from copper-mine a go.
