For a party that I am preparing for, I am investigating methods for providing the same music to the various existing stereos in my home. (Basement, Living Room, Garage, Kitchen).. This sounded like an easy project, but I have not found a suitable solution.
The goal is to play (broadcast) synchronized music from a single server (DJ computer if you will) to other devices that are connected to my home network. Without resorting to a FM broadcast.
I have investigated several media players:
Barix Exstreamer. This unit appears to do everything that I would like. However, it does not appear to be particularly well supported. Also, it is rather expensive. http://www.barix.com/
The Sonos unit also appears to have the functionality that I need. Unfortunately, I already have amplifiers/receivers, and don't need to pay $500 per location.
The Apple Airport Express does not appear to support multiple units playing syncronized music.
I emailed the techical support for the NetGear MP101, and after several tries, they replied that it will not play the same MP3 on syncronized units.
I am running windows XP on my home computer, my network consists of a Linksys 802.11b router/5port hub and a Linksys 16 port hub. While rewiring the house, the basement, living room, and kitchen all have multiple eithernet jacks. I have an old computer and a laptop, that could be used to play streaming media.
Is there another hardware or streaming audio solution that I have missed?
Thanks in advance.
