As the topic sums up I'm struggling with my banners for my site. I'm trying to make 4 for a style switcher on my site I'm in the process of building. There is one I think I could probably get down myself. Actually mabye 2 (actually probably not) of them I could get down myself but the rest I have no idea.

My site is based on web and games development. I think I could get the web design banner down and mabye the RPG one too. But the default one and the general games development one is what I'm stuck on. The default one I'm not so worried about at the moment actually it's the game development one. I want to base it slightly on the game maker sphere which looks like this.

Sorry for the vague picture but it was the first one I found with a basic google image search. I wanted to a kind of slightly cartoony (kind of like serious cartoony not kiddy cartoony) style banner for it. It says the sites name on the left side (I have already done a graphic I'm pleased with for the name) and on the right hand side it has a dim table lit by an oil lamp. There will be a hand coming in with a hammer shaping a sort of red ball into the style of the game maker sphere. He is about half way through doing it. The oil lamp shouldn't light the whole banner just a sort of elipse where the shaping is going on. Elsewhere it is a dark gray color.

What would be the best way of doing this? Sketching it out then doing the coloring (which I kinda suck at) in paintshop pro/fireworks (I have both) or doing it directly in the program. Any help is greatly appreciated thanks.

PS. I am not asking anyone to make me a logo just for tips on doing it myself.

My friend has the photoshop 7 disc I think. He says it's a complete resource hog though. But anyways I'm kinda leaning towards sketching them out and scanning them then touching them up. But I'm sure there must be a better way to do it but I can't do graphics to save my life.

PS. Good luck with your site.

You can also use GIMP (http://www.gimp.org), which is free ;)

It'll have to do though I suppose. Just 3 more to go. Plus it's seems a bit black. Any tips on making appealing layouts that are actually black. Black always seems a bit off to me.
