upload site to server

i'm using mysql and php to develop a website and someone told me i need a linux server what does this mean and how i can load my site to the server.....

you need a server (usually linux or unix) that supports the PHP scripting language, plus one that offers you MYSQL database access.

there are basically two camps, linux/unix and microsoft. ms hosting supports the likes of asp/asp.net etc, whilst linux supports php, perl, python etc.

you should then be able to upload the site using FTP details requested from your host.
