Just wanted to point this out. As going with my quest to find a new host, I hate how a simple date difference didn't come out in MySQL until 4.1
select datediff(CURDATE(),posted_on) from a_articles;
Works perfect on my 5.0 local but not 4.0 public :/

Are you seriously complaining that MySQL has a feature that you want? Really now. :p I reallydon't think that it's the MySQL's team at all. Many hosts don't like upgrading, but the fact of the matter is in the software world, you have to. Seriously there are still webhosts running MySQL 3.x and PHP 4.3.0!

Eh, just buy your own server with the latest versions of Oracle and the M$ OS/webserver/.NET suite, and then you won't have to worry about settling for any of this open-source crap out there.

Sorry, almost gagged on my own vomit there. :eek: ;)

No no, I think you misunderstood the situation. I'm on one of those hosts running really old setups. My host is up to MySQL 4.0.20 or something near there, which doesn't support a lot of the built in functions of 4.1+.
I agree that most hosts are very afraid to upgrade, because they simply don't know what's running on their clients sites. If they do upgrade and someone's site goes down, they're in trouble big time. So while someone like me might want to take the advantages of 4.1 or 5.0, other clients that don't update often won't want to go through the hassle of transitioning from one to another.

Ummm wow. I have no where near the money associated with setting up a dedicated server, irregarless of what's on it. And I never had any clue you didn't like open source, you seem to be a big supporter of PHP.

Was supposed to be me gagging on the idea of spending all that money to use proprietary OS and software when open-source will work just fine for over 90% of the stuff on the web. But I can see how it could be misinterpreted, even though I knew what I meant when I typed it.
Another feeble attempt at humor that failed in the translation from my brain to the keyboard. :)

I pretty much stand middle ground when it comes to open source - looking at it from a business/cost perspective. MySQL "claims" that it's cheaper to operate 20*4 CPU linux boxes all w/ mysql in replication mode than 1 Oracle database server on a 24 cpu box.
We costed it at my internship. They were wrong. Significantly. That includes them undercosting the Oracle system by $20k.
I think what most people miss (and thus can be seen in situations like mine w/ poor systems in operation) is that when you purchase from these larger companies, they have teams that will give you recommendations on the best way to configure the systems given your needs. Most open source solutions provide you with "user forums" to help you configure the software.
Oracle's installation guide is over 1000 pages. MySQL's is about 40 pages.

Yep. He's a one-of-a-kind mutt. That's one of the things I love about him.
