Hey guys I have come along way on my site. I am now using valid xhtml and css :) Please comment on the design and the menu thing on the top. Its all validated as strict xhtml. The links don't work right now.

Looks good to me!
The dropping menu is awsome...can't wait to see it after you get it finished!

But it does border on what the "websites that suck" guys call "mystery meat navigation." I saw that imoticon up there but it never dawned on me it was some kind of menu.

I know I know I am getting there. :) When I am done it will be obvious to click on that. :)

Look better ray? I put the Previous and Next navigation up there so I think that will help draw people to the menu (as well as navigate through the images)

Hi-

You need correct the spelling of "Virginia" -- you've got "Virgina" -- I'm not going to say what that might be of combo. of, except Freud would definitely have a field day with that slip. ;)

OH MY GOSH Thanks KDLA LOL. Besides the mis-spellings do you like the site? Do you feel its easy to use? My goal was to create my photography site to be real basic and to "just show my pictures".

As ray326 pointed out (I think he and I are on the same wavelength sometimes.... ), the mystery meat navigation (http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/mysterymeatnavigation.html) isn't really user friendly. I never did figure out how to advance to view other photographs.

This is just a picky observation: the gray background competes with your photos, rather than complimenting them. I'm the webmaster for an archival institution: we use a lot of b/w photographs. Usually, they are better enhanced by black (or any color darker than the darkest color in the photograph).

Ok i changed it a bit. I changed the grey to be a tad darker. I think you were right about that light grey. Does it make more since having the <<prev ??

I am sorry but I do like the menu because I wanted to place more light on the photos instead of having text and menus all over the place. I think people will find it when seeing the prev and I also set a title="menu" on the + sign. So I am hoping that may be more user friendly

I can understand your need to showcase the photos. The menu might be better if something other than a "+" were used, like "menu" or "links."

Ok kdla thanks for your input. :) I don't like have the word menu up there but I will think of something else instead of the plus sign :)

Hi there !!!!
First of all, very nice photography. ^^
For the dark grey bg, I think it's fine like that (seems to me that you darkened it after KDLA's post, no?).
The menu, now...
You know what ? I tried clicking around, and I never found out anything. I was going to post something like "where is the rest of the website" when I read the numerous posts about the so-difficult-to-see-but-right-here-on-top menu.
I don't think text would keep the focus out of the photography. But if you have a menu that's so unobvious, people might not want to click all around till something happens.
I would suggest a menu that's always visible, and try putting it in the right top corner. People are used to having things in the right top corner, it won't distract them from the picture ^^
(yeah, I know, I am strange)

Ok Ness thanks for all of your comments. I will be changing the menu on the top just like it is on the bottom. (Real basic) So it will be easyer to view. No hidden meat navigation :)

Ok guys what do you think of it now? www.digitaleyesandears.com/testing/One ....Hover over number 1. The numbers will be my navigation. (No Next or Prev like everybody else has). Any ideas though for a good background for my site? I don't really like it that much. Keep in mine most of my stuff is black and white photography. :) Thanks guys

Hmmm... when I hover over the "1," one of those nasty boxes with a red "x" appears. Although, if I wait a couple of seconds, the image does eventually appear.
(Should the image appear if you're already on the page viewing it? It'd be sort of like having a link TO the homepage ON the homepage..... Maybe that particular number could be black with no image.)

Why don't you use a textured background, mimicking an old-fashioned scrapbook. Maybe a texture like construction paper or vellum. Instead of gray, you might use taupe, just to add some warmth to your scheme.

KDLA thanks for your input your awsome :) I wil lbe changing the numbering thing. It will not show the thumbnail of the picture your currently viewing. Do you think it will look better on the bottom? Or is is ok on the top? As far as the thumbnails taking a sec to load maybe I can figure out how to preload the images. What color is taupe? And what is the color code for that do you know?

I like it down the side - it accomodates more screen set-ups that way.

Taupe is a gray-brown
Light Taupe #D4D1B2
Medium Taupe #9C9A80
Dark Taupe #5C5136

Hi -
I would just suggest a sans-serif font, instead &
left-aligned text for the other pages.
[Why do the internal links open a new window?]

You might also consider using headings on your pages
to help folks know right away where they are & why.

Have fun,
El

hey guys i actually have made some changes to my site. First off its new home is www.lifethroughpictures.org. I changed the background color which alot of people told me I should. I will be changing the font type too here soon. I wanted to know how everybody thought the background color looked? Also for those who hate pop-ups I am sorry but for my site they make since to use. I use them that way people are not taken off of the picture they are viewing.

thanks

I like the beige more than the gray. It instantly brightens up things. You might select a softer shade, just so it isn't so bright as to compete with your photo.
