Anyone know of an example of how to create the effect of a book opening with an applet? I am new to java (relatively speaking), I have seen an open source example with flash mx

This sounds like it would be a PITA. You would need to create all kinds of custom stuff to get that effect (or find a third party lib that does it). Truthfully, Flash really is better suited for this type of work.
