Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : What RAM is right for me?
Hi everybody,
How can I tell what kind of RAM is compatible with my laptop? It’s a Compaq Presario R3000 (customized). I’m considering buying the memory stick at < http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?cp=&productId=2211681&tab=summary >, but I don’t know how to tell if my system is compatible with it, or if it’s the right number of pins, or what.
Thanks

Go to Crucial's web site. (http://www.crucial.com) They have a memory selection helper there. Otherwise, it should be in your owners manual.
I have a very nice freeware program that gives you all this information as well as other info about your system. I can't find it on the web for some reason. I can send it to you in e-mail if you would like (it's only about 300kb). You can email me at jay[NOSPAM]@miristudios.com .
Cheers
Thanks.
According to Crucial.com, I need 1GB DDR 200-pin SODIMM, which is not the same deal as what I linked to above. I was hoping it was, because that’s a great deal, but I guess I’ll have to pay the $150 for 1GB of RAM.
I’ll double-check my computer manual to be sure, though.
Thanks again.

You don't have to buy memory from Crucial. Just find the memory type for the price you want. Check out pricewatch.com for good deals.

That's quite expensive for 1GB. I got my 1GB Samsung stick for $120 CAD.
Thanks, I realize that, but so far the cheapest price I’ve been able to find has been, I think, $130.
Do you think buying (new or used) hardware from eBay is a good idea, or does this typically result in damaged hardware?
I think it's definantly a good idea, but you have to beware who you're buying from. I saved $150 when I bought my Canon G5 camera from eBay and it was brand new and never opened. Generally, I never buy anything from anyone with less than 500 Feedback and 99% positive. Also, make sure they have a Return Policy and a damaged goods policy. I would recommend you go with new hardware, because you never know if there's anything wrong with used hardware.
