I thought it would be interesting to see what people's jobs are.

I'm a student currently in my second year of university. I'm a freelance web designer during the week, and a bartender on fridays and saturdays. In April I start my summer job as junior developer at a game developement company. It will be my first "junior developer" job so I'm nervous and excited at the same time.

What about you?

a High School student who tutors most saturdays and does some Web Design/Programming (or attempted) for clubs and orgainizations at my school. Not for profits, though.

I work for a utility company in the IT department. One of my duties is webmaster, maintaining a horrible site. Over 100 pages, not including archives of board meetings, filled with tables and non-compliant code. I spend most of my spare time at work redesigning the site.

I've also done web design work on the side for about 10 years now in my spare time at home.

I'm a student in my final years of secodary school - I have just started my own web design company (http://www.highlandwebservices.com), and business is going well. I am still developing my main site but there are a couple of client sites up.

Anyone want to hire a very experienced software test engineer who's also pretty handly with PHP and MySQL? :)

Try Monster (http://www.monster.com). I got a job as a junior developer for a game company using that site. Even though we use different programming languages, relatively speaking, you're much more knowledgeable than me. :( I'm sure you can easily get a job as senior software engineer. Only annoying thing about job applications is you have to write cover letters for every single one :p .

Cheers

How I wish - I won't be elligible for Social Security for another 17+ years. :(

Unfortunately, I think I'm reaching that stage where I'm starting to suffer from age discrimination - employers would rather hire a 20-something they can pay an entry-level salary while expecting them to work 60-hour weeks, even though I could get the same quantity of work done in a 40-hour week. *sigh*

College student at Auburn University. I am about to start my first Co-Op work term as an electrical computer engineer with VT Miltope in Montgomery. It looks like I will begin work for them in august.

VT Miltope makes ruggedized computers and periphrials for the military and commercial aviation companies. Stuff that can run at -40c to 50c, can be dropped from 10ft in the air and not care, and pretty much be run over by a humvy and not care. Their laptops are completely rain proof too. Their hard drives have heaters built onto them and shocked built into the casing. Its really cool stuff. The lcd screens have this anti-glare coting so you can use them in the middle of the desert at high noon and be able to read the screen christal clear. They sell for like 6 grand each.
http://www.miltope.com/tsc-750m.html
The thing has no fans on it (it has to be sealed of course to be water proof) and is completley cooled passively... but the case is magnesium for strength. So it is a cooling nightmare. The next jen version has a few copper heat pipes coming down through the base of the case and a big aluminum heat sink with fans onit under it, so it's even thicker. With the sink it weighs about 15.5 ~ 16lbs. These aren't built to be carried around to and from work.

One co op student for them was able to keep one of their laptops because he needed it for a project here so it was kind of given to him under the table (this is a rumor though, not sure of the validity). But if I could snag anything it would be the WASP they built... it has a range of about two miles.

Well see, I sort of go to this place called school that really sucks. Then I go home, and miraculously, my mom gives me food. The whole situation is bad/good if you think about it.

Mailman, postman, letter carrier... You name it. I deliver parcels (packages) to private (individual) recipients. :)

I do like the job. Lots of excercise, great colleagues, 37 hour weeks, very normal wages, 6 weeks of vacation, weekends free - and best of all, almost impossible to lay off (civil servant).

Just too bad management has some pretty backwards thinking on many things.

So, what about WebDev?

That's done in my spare time. Been hanging pretty low lately, though.

No, but I worked for about nine year on the Enhanced Naval Warfare Gaming System (ENWGS - a theater-level wargaming system for the US Navy) if that counts. :)

I tried googling ENWGS to see what the game looked like but it didn't turned out many helpful pages. What was your main task?

I was in testing. This was back in the late '80s to early '90s. Each workstation had one large rgb monitor that displayed a vector graphic presentation something like a radar screen (actually more like a Link-11 display) and was surrounded by 3 to 5 smaller monocrhome monitors with various, selectable text reports. (It normally required a trained enlisted operator to perform all the inputs while the officers being trained just gave verbal orders.)

To see what it evolved into after I left the program, you can view this PowerPoint presentation: http://www.ddlomni.com/Products/ENWGS_briefing.ppt (I couldn't find any good info on the web as to what it was like when I was there.)
