Dont you just love it...
The way it loads so fast - no confusing menus. Visit here for a fun take on notepad (http://notepad.org/)

Although the smell of sarcasm was pungent on that site, I really do love notepad, and for all the reasons listed. It's perfectly named as well.

Me too, less clutter means you get more of the stuff that actually matters on the screen.

Definitely a case of less is more...

I used to do everything in notepad, but after finally getting a copy of Visual Studio, I have abandoned notepad. Only thing I use it for now is CSS, which is not that much.

I've done just the opposite. Was given VS years ago and went back to notepad. Actually, I use Win32Pad and, sometimes, Crimson Editor.

Quote: "Universal application for all versions of Windows".

And that is where Notepad fails. I prefer JEdit (http://slettes.dk/redirect_to/?url_name=http://www.jedit.org/). Written in Java, so it runs on Mac OS X, OS/2, Unix, VMS and Windows. :)

Well, there again, like almost any program, text editors are a very personal choice

If you want to slow your productivity then yes use notepad but I'd agree most programs are just bloat.

Maybe I'm just different, but I've found that my productivity is actually better with notepad. WYSIWYG stuff just causes too much re-coding. With stuff like html-kit, I tend to be faster just typing the tags rather than reaching for the mouse and clicking on the tag. Maybe it's from coding experience, but I just type faster with both hands on the keyboard all the time. Of course I hardly touch my keyboard when surfing. As far as the color coding available in some applications, I tend to type my code organized well enough not to need it.

There are a couple of features that I wouldn't mind adding to notepad, such as line numbering and something similar to what dreamweaver has in code-view where you can "close" elements and hide the code that is in them. If that's not described too well then I apologise, but I can't really think of another way to describe it that wouldn't take several pages.

Colour-coding doesn't really work for me, I find that it puts me off. I prefer to have maximum contrast between the code and the background, helps me to scan through the code quicker and find what I want.

Yeah I get you. I find that particuarly useful for hiding unessecary stuff. But I wouldn't add it to notepad. It works because its so simple - start messing with and all sorts of things can happen. Thats why its best those features are kept to dreamweaver type programs.

If you want that, color highlightning, good tabbing, a very light app, etc.. try SciTE
