I have just bough a new computer and wish to transfer all the files and applications from the old computer.

Unfortunately there is something wrong with the CD writer in the old computer and was now able to back up everything onto CD.

I was going to buy a USB Data Transfer Cable but have also be told that a USB2 network cable would be better. (None of the computers has a network card).

Also i have the following difficulty as I wish to transfer some of the software as a couple of my CDs have been damaged and will not play in either computer.

Can anyone recommend which cable I should buy and how I do the data transfer?

All help much appreciated.

Just get a usb data transfer cable, I'd imagine you could do usb two with one of them if both machines support it. If not that look into a nice large jump drive.

or u could use a floppy and use Winzip WInrar to splitinto 1.44mb :) lol

Or a LAN cable direct-connecting between the LAN card on each, perhaps?

Or a router, hook both them up set the network up for file sharing just set like the old one to share the folders needed and copy them over, saves money if you dont have the right LAN cable because normal ethernet ones will not work due to some reason i cant recall at the moment.

There are a few alternatives:

a) Ethernet transfer, for this both PC's will need a network card, then you can connect them directly (via a cross-over cable), or through a switch.

b) Firewire to firewire transfer, for this both PC's will need firewire ports on them. You'd need to have a direct connection between the PC's.

c) HDD to HDD transfer, if you don't mind messing about in the insides of PC's then you can take the HDD from the first PC out and put it in the second, boot up normally on the second PC, then simply copy the files you want from one HDD to the other.

d) External HDD, if you can beg, borrow or steal an external HDD, it would be simple enough to hook it up to the first PC, copy stuff onto it, then connect it up to the second and copy it off again.

e) Depending on how much you want to copy accross, you could upload it to the internet if you have some web-space, then download it on the second computer.
