A token ring network is one in which requests are passed from the user machine to the network as a token and the network routes the token to the specific network machine that has been setup to handle the request. The request (token) is received, processed, and the token in then put back on the network to handle the next request. All of this happens in nanoseconds but you can see how inefficient this might be.
