I am as thick as 2 shoret planks. I need a free java menu for the left hand frame of a new site. somthing that will save space but be easily navigable

By, "save space," you mean... Disk space? Or layout-space? In any case, you could try http://dynamicdrive.com/ for some DHTML menus that will help you a lot.

Also, Java and JavaScript are two completely different programming languages.

That link does not work. Your site is http://lightinfantryreunited.co.uk/ ? I won't sneer at your code, although I might point out a few errors that it may possibly have.... Since that site didn't work for me, I don't quite know what you want still.
