MySQL on Mac

I am currently running Mac OS X 10.6.8 and I am learning how to use Apache, PHP and MySQL. I have enabled Apache2 and PHP and installed MySQL but I am unable to start MySQL. How do I determine if I installed MySQL correct and how do I turn on the MySQL terminal so that I can start building databases? I am assuming I have to do something so that MySQL will connect with my webserver? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Which version of MySQL did you installed?

MySQL Community Server 5.5.25

Mac OS X ver. 10.6 (x86, 64-bit), DMG Archive
(mysql-5.5.25-osx10.6-x86_64.dmg)

At http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/

I originally had XAMMP installed on my computer and deleted it before i installed mysql.

I went into my terminal and typed "uname -a" to determine which bit I needed download.
