You are correct! Except you have to do it by appending a createTextNode to the element when using the xml dom. I had to move over to the xml dom to keep it from chopping up the tags when it rendered...

apparently this is only happening when i display the markup from innerHTML to innerText. when converted back to innerHTML and when i save the page, the markup is as it should be, weird stuff this...
