pausing movie on inactive page

Is it possible to freeze an animated gif while the page is inactive, and then have it play when the page becomes active again? My page has a new window opening up on top of the old one. The animations underneath are distracting and I'd like them to stop playing until the new window is closed. Is there some type of code that could make this happen? Thanks!

Animated gif's are on a continuos reel - they go in loops no matter what to my knowedge.

What you could do it make the pop-up window large enough to cover the entire back page and then you wouldn't see anything at all, or position the pop up to the bottom of the user's window when it pop's up, or get rid of the ani's
