Poorly rendered text in graphics

Does anyone have ideas about how to make a graphic that includes text render the text better?

I try to use html to create text, but sometimes it is just impossible to avoid using a graphics program to put the text into the graphic. The anti-aliased text just never looks great.

(PS my avatar is a photograph of an actual tile from the Alhambra, LOL, that's the way it looks in real life -- all smoogy.)
