refreshing part of a page

I have been watching Google change the soccer results on its page and the scores change without a complete page refresh or am I just not seeing the page refresh..??

Anyone know how they do that..?

They're probably using AJAX.

I'm a bit too long in the tooth to start learning AJAX so how about I push a new page instead of the viewer requesting a refresh.. Is that possible.?

(and I mean push it when I need to, not a META tag refresh)

and how do I do it..?

I could be wrong, but I think that pushing a new page is not possible. Besides even if it was, many firewalls would block that kind of thing.
