Problem with midi files

I have a game that uses a midi file for background music. After a reinstall of my OS (and subsequent reinstall of my game) it won't play the midi anymore. I use Windows XP Home for an OS.

Can you play the file directly from a media player of some sort, at all? Can you play any Midi files any more?

I can play it from Windows Media Player or from iTunes, but it sounds weird when I do it.
