Question how to do shadow and border with Photoshop?

I test Photoshop and need to know how to do border and shadow on my photo (person).

As I'm new, need help how to do it with steps. I made layer with CTRL+J and than made shadow with double click on layer. There is no result as I wish.

    Need help.

You need to make some space for the blending to show. If your pictures is 200x200, you need to increase the image size to say 205x205pix but keep the original size of the image,200.

Or try using the a marquie tool and circle your pictures to select it. Then use the inverse selection and delete the white space. Apply the blending.

    Good luck,
    Eugene

what febrocks was trying to say is that you need to resize the canvas not the whole image. This will give you empty space around the original image where shadow will show!
