New to java script

I am new to java and pardon me if this is a dumb question. I take the code of web pages and paste it into a HTML Document. I make sure that I have images for all called up on gif files. Some code still does not work like passovers and similar schems. Is there something else that I need to add.

And before you go any father, know that "Java" != "JavaScript". They are 2 entirely separate languages, and the names are not interchangeable.

This is my understanding

Java languge is a code that needs to be compiled and callup on HTTM script through an applet.

Java script is code that goes directly on the web file in the HTTM code and can affect the web page:

There is a support file that goes with it. As you can see when you stick it in a web browser the images are loaded however do not highlight when the mouse is drawn over them. I simply take the httm code and place it and the images in a project folder. The example that I am getting is from
