Mmmm, I did not read all replies and posts, but I will tell you my own opinion.
I think it depends on what you plan to do with your computer.
I mean, for somebody who's just surfing on the net, and sometimes using Word or watching movies on his computer, Dell is just find. It's cheap, and not bad.
My boyfriend has had a Dell for 5 years, and it was okay.
I've had a HP for 10 years, and it's still ok.
(I'm talking about laptops, here).
Dell are cheap, BUT : if you want something good, extra RAM, extra stuff, you pay the BIG BIG price.
I would say, for something simple, buy Dell. For something a bit better, buy HP. HP is quality, and for the same price, you get better stuff than with Dell.
But then, I never owned a Dell (and I never will), so I cannot really compare.
To build your own computer is the solution, but for laptops, it's hard to find anything (especially outside the US).
My dream computer is a Vaio (sony), because their screens kick ass.
Mmm, what can I add to that...
A friend has an HP, it works great, too. In the university, they all have Dell. It works ok too.
For me, if I had to choose, I would buy HP, just because I'm sure of the quality.
But, for people who don't spend their life on a computer, I would say, buy a Dell.
For information, my current laptop is a macintosh, and my PC was self built, so I'm not especially biased in a way or another. But I liked my HP Omnibook 800 a lot, snifff... it's not dead yet, but who wants to use a computer with 16 MRAM and a 1 Go hard drive ? Pentium 133 ? lol !!

402 post! Ha HA!
30 to 20...
Man, this thread still lingers. It's like the thing that wouldn't die!
I noticed that Dells are starting to put card readers into their machines.
HP's been doing that for a couple years now- Crummy dell copycats!
Oh, I don't know if any of you recall my insane rantings about our old Dell keyboard earlier in this thread (Few months back). I was ranting on about how I would like to smash the keyboard, break off the keys and blend them into molten wax to make a candle. Now that we got our new HP, we had no need for our old keyboard (cuz the hp has a SWEET keyboard). I didn't make the candle, but I did smash the keyboard with a hammer, stomped on it, and smashed it against the wall and threw it away (Only after I rearrenged the keys)
Rearranging keys is fun. Somebody at our school is always switching the F3 and F4 keys- that drives me crazy!!!

I knew you wouldn't be able to resist. Of course, others keep it alive now more than you.
