absolute path and relative path

Whats the difference between absolute path and relative path ?

I read that absolute path starts from root directory and begins with /

Isnt it required to specify full path all the time ? Otherwise how wd a file be located if same file name exists in different directories ?

Whats the advantage of using either path ?
