Question Windows XP - Dual Boot after crash ...

    Hi guys,

I really hope someone can help me with this?

Basically, Windows crashed a couple of days ago, where I had to install a second session on a dual boot. The problem is, how can I somehow access my previous Microsoft Outlook "system state" and retrieve my personal folders, as they were before the crash?

I can't get into the previous version at all, as it shows the boot up screen (famous four coloured window with the scrolling bar) ... then just goes into darkness. I can't even get into Safe Mode or a Dos prompt.

Right now, I am running a clean "basic" version on the 2nd boot option, where I am quite happy installing all my progs again (most on backup anyway) ... it's just the e-mail issue of "hopefuuly" retieving my old e-mails which worries me.

I've tried "R=Repair" with my XP disc, but the funny thing is, it doesn't recongise the original boot option through it's repair screens, but the dual options do show up on the boot.ini and startup screen.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

    Hey Calman,

The way that windows boots can cause some confusion if you have not seen this before. There are a few ways we can (hopefully) score your email back. first of all please do something for me.

    Click Start
    Click Run
Type 'dxdiag' into the run window
    Click OK
Click Yes on the pop up window
Click Save All Information button on the bottom

Save that file to your desktop and open it

    Paste that into here.

ok What drive letter is your current windows on?

    Looks like C:

that tells me that your old emails (if you used outlook) are on drive d: or e:

Search those drives (right click start click explore) click on the plus sign next to drive d: and then e: (one at a time)

Look for documents and settings let me know if you see either of those.

    no problem.

Not possible for C: to be holding your old OS and the new one (the new one would have wiped it out which means no email!)

If you reinstalled windows on the same partition the only way to get your old .pst file back is with a data recovery tool like GetDataBack (my personal favorite) or any other tool of the sort. You will have to pay for the program, but it sounds like that is the only way to do it. Sorry for the bad news...

If you decide to get * getdataback * and you need help just post on this same thread

and there is no gaurentee the new OS didn't install over the same sectors that were holding your email.

    Yup, I'm affraid that's what I've done.

As my current drive C: shows two folder:

    C:\windows.0
    C:\windows.2

Both Ops show up under boot.ini, although on the Windows Recovery routine, it only shows the new clean install.

So, am I pretty much screwed? (as I didn't think to backup my E-mail *.pst prior to the windows problems)

    Cal

hmmm like I said, you may need to run data recovery (never know its kinda of a 50/50 chance.

Have you checked under documents and settings to see what user profiles are listed there?
