imap_8bit question

Could someone tell me why this:

$content="montréal";
$content=imap_8bit($content);
echo $content;

returns:

montr=8Eal

instead of:

montr=E9al

Oh you know why because I am saying convert it to quoted-printable from 8bit and the 8bit character for small 'e' with acute accent is È. So this would work:

$content="montrÈal";
$content=imap_8bit($content);
echo $content;

Results in montr=E9al which would be 'montréal' converted from quoted-printable.
