I expected everything to flow down the page, but it doesn't seem to in FF (IE is OK?).

Don't worry about the <mr...> tags - we use a unique DE that renders the page for us. And don't worry about the margins - the DE jerks those also.

I suspect that first <div> with <span>s and <div>s inside?

It is definitely not ok in IE8 nor IE8 running compatibility mode (effectively IE7). Don't know which version of IE you're using, but it's out of date if it renders it correctly.
