Could it be something fishy with your PHP.ini file?

this is going to sound so stupid that we both missed it.. I am embarrassed, but here it is.
It was a simple syntax error. I left off the beginning "/"... thats it
Redirect 301 about/articles.html http://www.website.com/about/press.php
notice the "/" at the beginning of the old URL...and viola.. now it works perfect!
Redirect 301 /about/articles.html http://www.website.com/about/press.php

yeah, so, for the record, despite all of the horror stories for getting this 301 Redirect to work with GoDaddy you can find on Google, it will work. things must have changed from all those posts I read about how hard they make it.
just need to check you syntax
BTW, for the record I actually used
301 permanent and not 301 Redirect - but "technically" either should work
