    Exclamation mod_rewite and .htaccess causing 500 server error??

    i have this web address comp.***.co.uk and i am using mod-rewrite, the problem is my mod_rewrite script causes a 500 server error and i can't understand why....

    i want the url ".co.uk/1" and ".co.uk/1/" to redirect to "index.php?comp=1"

    my .htaccess file in full

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteRule ^([^/]*)$ /?comp=$1 [L]
    RewriteRule ^([^/]*)/$ /?comp=$1 [L]
    Please Help

    You will need to check the apache error logs fro the exact error message as there are many reasons behind 500 error message.
