    Help with Permanent Click Counter

I am trying to get a click counter for a website, where a user clicks a link or button and a value, displayed next to the button, says how many times that button has been clicked. However, I can't find a way to make that value stay- when another user, or even the same user goes back to that page, the value is back at 0. Is there a way to do this with javascript, or do I have to use PHP to store the value in a file?
