That would be the use of javascript.

skywalker2208, thanks for responding;
I am unaware that js has access to anything similar to an alpha css style;

interesting ... but jquery's fadeTo is a custom function belonging to the jquery library ... I wonder how their fadeTo function does what it does?
any ideas?
thanks,
Shannon

interesting; I was unaware that filters were possible ... hmm
thanks for your time;
skywalker, any thoughts as to the browser compatibility of element.style.opacity?
when I go to:
msdn's opacity definition , it does not mention where the opacity is defined ( on the other hand it says that the DIV element is defined via "This object is defined in HTML 3.2 World Wide Web link and is defined in World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Document Object Model (DOM) Level 1 World Wide Web link." ).
when I test jquery's fadeTo function, which implements .style.opacity, it works in all my windows browsers;
any insights please;
thanks,
Shannon

I guess I could have found that myself ... maybe I should have looked ... thanks;
