Advice on making a simple image gallery please

I want to have a big image and say 5 small thumbnails underneath. When the user clicks a thumbnail, the image loads where the previous big image was. Is there a standard way to do this? Can someone please advise me, I'd be extremely grateful. Thank you.

thank you. I think I've managed it now with using getElementByIt and set attribute.

One more question though, is it best to load thumbnail version of the big image that then point to the main image when selected? Or is it better to load the thumbnails by setting their size so all images are then loaded ready to be clicked on? I'm just conscious of there being an initial long load time.

Depends on the number of images and the size of the 'big' images.
Generally pre-load the thumbnails and the rest on demand.
The thumbnails could be loaded as a sprite which saves on bandwidth.
