Calling a Javascript Function???

I am VERY NEW to javascript programming as I am to web development. I am pretty decent with VB.Net though. My question is, what are the different ways to call a JavaScript Function either from within XHTML Markup code or from a VB.Net Code-Behind file?

I'm playing around with it and finding it's not as easy as some people have led me to believe. If someone has any examples that would be even better. I learn from seeing more than reading or hearing.

I checked out W3Schools and while it is informative, there was no mention of how VB.Net and Javascript intermix.
