Online Checklist?

Hello! I'm new here and have a question I need some help on.
I am wanting to use checkboxes to allow my users to have an "online checklist" that they can return to to update as needed.

How can I set the checkboxes to stay checked for repeat visits?

This will be used for a particular comic book collecting site, where guests can check a box next to an issue they own, so they can return to the site as their collection grows to add more issues.

Not with html.
A basic list could be saved with cookies, but using a server-side language would be a better option.

mmm cookies... I was afraid that may be the best option, unfortunately I have no idea how to go about setting something like this up. Can you point me in the right direction...

Server-side language is the best option.
The cookies link shows how to read and write values.

I'd go server side - with a log-in to access the appropriate data from a flat file or MySQL (or similar) database).
