    Charset confusion

    Hi

Does the charset have to be set in the meta tags ? If it's not there what is the consequence ?

I have come across x2: charset=utf-8 and charset=iso-8859-1 what is the difference between them and which should I use

Thanks for any help with this.

The charset is set by the server. The meta tag is only used if the document is saved offline.
If you want to validate your document then include a meta tag (that is the same as the server)

    iso-8859-1 is a sub-set of utf-8
For most west European languages, iso-8859-1 would suffice, but if you intend using Gaelic words then use utf-8. The font used in the document can affect the characters displayed.
