well, you'll need HTML/XHTML/XML/XSLT/CSS/JavaScript and some server-side scripting language, preferably more than one. Some of these are PHP, Java (in the form of JSP most often these days), C#,and a host of others.

    1. Go to http://www.the-web-book.com/, download the e-book and read it.
    2. Go to http://w3schools.com/ and dive into the tutorials there.

    Good luck,

Certification is not necessary. W3schools is good, but with all programming, experience is the most vital, in a few regards. Firstly, it's only with practice that you will become good, especially if you've never programmed before. Secondly, a portfolio is as good as if not better than most certs as far as convincing clients goes.

I see several good answers and I thought "The Web Book" was an excellent piece of work. Thank you for that, jpijper.

OK, step one: go to the website above, W3 schools.com and learn HTML. That's the first step.
