    How is this done?

I'm wondering how this is done:

    http://www.pcmech.com/

Where it says "Join 28000 subscribers" on top right in black text with yeelo background.

When you click it you get a nice popout, that also has a close button.

I'd like to do this but also not to have the text for the box inline, and rather in an external file where is is not read by search bots.

"a nice popout" is up to your designing skills, but the basic script is a lightbox and in your case would require Ajax to load the content from the server.

Oh thanks, but it seems that all the text has to be inline if I want to use a lightbox, is there an alternative method where all the content (text, subscription forms etc) are loaded from an external file?

    Thanks
