div will not nest nest to the other div's inline

I am attempting to create a header in css with very neat "rollover buttons"

the top buttons should all be next to each other, this is my first website where I am writing the css and html from scratch so any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Use block-level elements (div) and float them:

I ended up making the background the same color as the buttons, no problems now. Thanks for the help and the link.
