A pop up window that returns php value to parent

I'm very new to php and such and am having a hard time finding my answer on the web.

I have a form right now that submits data to a php file that then writes it into a mySQL database. What I am looking to do is have a search box on the form that launches a popup window which will run an already existing php search page and show results. The user could then click which search result they want and the popup would close and fill out certain form fields with that search result. Then the user could finish filling in the form and submit it.

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Is this even possible? Am I making it too difficult?

Sounds like a job for AJAX, which is simply (?) a special use of JavaScript to send requests to the server and update the page based on the response without reloading the page.
