[RESOLVED] ASP to post/get data from MS SQL Server DB
A beginner at scripting ASP and PHP, I have an eLearning lesson that has a pre-configured MS SQL Server DB. So when a student registers for a lesson, their name, email are recorded into the DB.
A separate Flash SWF file, created in a third-party program that exports to Flash, is available for additional student help but should be viewed only by students who have registered and taken the lesson.
So, I need to create a script that can allow the Flash SWF to connect with the lesson's MS SQL Server DB and check if a name (maybe also email address) matches with one entered into the Flash SWF (input text box). A check to see if they are registered, taken the lesson.
Difficulty for me as a beginner is that the only available sample scripts provided in a tutorial in the third party Flash authoring program are written for the Flash SWF to use PHP (not ASP) to connect with a MySQL (not MS SQL Server) DB. The lesson cannot use a MySQL DB. So, while I have working PHP sample script, I am not able to translate the script into ASP so it can be used with the lesson's MS SQL Server DB.
I've searched a lot for tutorials, sample scripts for PHP connecting to MS SQL Server. It appears this is not an easy task. And, even though I've read ASP learning materials, I still cannot figure out a working ASP script that can get 1-2 data items from the MS SQL Server DB. (I will also need to figure out the connection string using an OLEDB type connection, but there is a sample available for this in the lesson's help files).
Sorry for the long explanation...
Steep learning curve for me as a retired social worker. I would appreciate any help.
What your asking is a lot for anyone here to answer all at one. What you need to do is break it down into smaller parts, work on 1 part of your lession at any one time.
You need to learn some ASP to connect to a database and query it to return your data into a Recordset. here is a link to a page for sample code:
The retrieving variables from a Flash movie is another part of your task. Here is a basic sample of Sending and retrieve data from a Flash movie:
Now it really is up to you to look through this.
Thanks for these leads. Have mostly gotten this completed. Am now working on the ActionScript side to configure the Flash part of the scripting.
