    image gallery, flash or what?

    Hi there,
I just start building my own photography website, and I would like to have a few pages with a kind of image gallery, something like this http://www.danielkennedy.com/ or http://www.steffenallen.com/portfolio.php?g=4 in terms of functionalities, with a series of thumbnails at either the bottom or the side, and the main pictures in the middle. I would also like to have a personalized framed (possibly a jpeg), so I wonder what would be the best way to build such a gallery? Would flash be a good idea or better use javascript or maybe just CSS? I know absolutely nothing about flash and just the very basics of javascript (although I know a little bit of C++ if that could help somehow).

    Any suggestion appreciated
    thanks

thanks Victorious, that seems a reallt good product and I think I will look into that a bit more, however it doesn't look like it will let me use my own theme. Let me explain. The websites I included in my previous post all seem to use an off-the-shelf product like the one you suggested, which is fine, but if I want to, say, put a border or a frame I should say around the pictures I can't. The product you suggested doesn't seem to allow that, so maybe you or someone else is aware of other products that might allow that. I slowly start thinking that develop my own gallery javascript or whatever else might be a bit too much for me considered my limited experience...

This is where you are totally wrong any jQuery plugin will allow you to style it your own way simply by editing the stylesheet that comes with it and if it does not come with the stylesheet it is most likely to create html elements on which you can apply your own styles or override the standard stylesheet.

Galleria is one of the most flexible solutions I came across (although I tend to write my own solutions rather than 3rd party) just second to the Cycle plugin.

If you want a Flash gallery maybe this is a good choice:
